In Mandarin Chinese, the name for the language can be said as “zhōng wén” which is the language of the Mainland or literally “central character” as China is considered the center of the world and characters are the form or script of the language. Still, for so many people, the spoken language is considered “pú tōng huà” or the “commonly communicated language” probably better translated as the commonly spoken language of the people.
